Reid Paley - Approximate Hellhound
First off, I’m not a music writer. But I love Reid’s music, and I am a writer, and this is my blog. (So there!) If you wanna hear it, go here.
I love Reid Paley. Can I just say that? I loved him in The Five, back in Boston, because he was scary and screamed and his hair hung over his eye. There was something seriously bad there. He was great.
Life goes on, people change. Some get better, some get worse, some get … weary. Reid gets better, he doesn’t get weary, he drinks and lives and sings and plays and keeps going. And writes. “Never drink alone” he sang on “Revival”, but you know he does and it’s okay. He ironically called one cd “Lucky’s Tune” and one look at the cover tells you that it’s his own sick joke and you’re in on it. Through a glass darkly, indeed. Reid endures. And so do we, for seeing him and listening to him on “Approximate Hellhound” (one can only imagine him over some sort of official questionnaire, say, a passport application, having to answer “Profession?”) sing “Everything is Going Wrong and That’s Alright” is an affirmation that indeed, everything is. Reid prevails and so do we. If you look closely, you’ll see that sparkle in his eye. Just don’t let on.
